SMITHERS -- Since July 1, the Northwest Fire Centre (NWFC) has responded to 37 wildfires in the Cassiar Fire Zone and northern Skeena Fire Zone. Initial Attack Crews have achieved good success resulting in 24 of these wildfires being called out. Five are currently listed as Out of Control, three as Being Held and five as Under Control, all within the Cassiar Fire Zone. More information on stages of control can be found here.

Firefighters, officers and support staff have been working diligently on response plans and suppression tactics for the larger and more remote wildfires and those without safe access.

None of the active wildfires are currently threatening communities or infrastructure. The BC Wildfire Service continues to have Initial Attack Crews and aircraft positioned in the Cassiar Fire Zone on standby to respond to any potential new incidents, though fewer are expected due to changing weather conditions.

For the upcoming week, NWFC forecasters are calling for cooler temperatures and showers to remain over the Cassiar Fire Zone. This downturn in weather will bolster the efforts of ground crews over the last week and in the days ahead.

To report a wildfire, unattended campfire or open burning violation, call 1 800 663-5555 toll-free or *5555 on a cell phone.
SMITHERS -- Between July 1st and July 4th, the Northwest Fire Centre (NWFC) responded to 11 wildfires as a result of lightning activity following several days of warm and dry conditions. Four of these wildfires have been called out, and seven remain active, all within the Cassiar Fire Zone. The majority of these wildfires are in modified response areas. Wildfires in modified response areas will be monitored and long-term operational plans will be developed. This includes identification of values that, if threatened, will trigger an altered response to the fire.

SMITHERS -- The BC Wildfire Service is urging the public to be cautious with all burning and outdoor activities in the Cassiar Fire Zone over the long weekend and into next week. Northwest Fire Centre weather forecasters are calling for warm and dry conditions in the Cassiar Fire Zone with expected lightning activity, including the possibility for dry lightning to occur. There are numerous wildfires burning further to the north in the Yukon Territory, including near the B.C. border, and weather conditions similar to the Yukon Territory currently exist in the Cassiar Fire Zone. Smoke from these Yukon wildfires may become visible over the weekend.

The Northwest Fire Centre has positioned firefighters and resources in the Cassiar Fire Zone and will have additional personnel on standby to respond if required. The public can support these efforts by remaining vigilant and reporting any potential wildfires.

Currently, the Northwest Fire Centre has no prohibitions in effect. However, extreme caution is urged when lighting any campfire, Category 2 or Category 3 open fire in the Cassiar Fire Zone.

If a wildfire occurs as a result of your burning, you may be found responsible for the government's fire control costs and any related damages to Crown resources. In addition, there are administrative penalties of up to $100,000 that may be levied for failing to comply with your obligations under the Wildfire Act and Regulation.

To report a wildfire, unattended campfire or open burning violation, call 1 800 663-5555 toll-free or *5555 on a cellphone.
Open fire prohibition for Northwest Fire Centre

SMITHERS -The BC Wildfire Service will be implementing a Category 2 and 3 open fire prohibition due to current and forecast weather conditions in parts of the Northwest Fire Centre (NWFC). The prohibition will take effect 12 noon Pacific Daylight Time (PDT) on Friday, April 15, 2022. Despite the current cooler temperatures throughout the region, relative humidity levels are low throughout areas of the NWFC. Gusting winds, little precipitation and a warming trend is in the long-term forecast and are the trigger points for this proactive open fire prohibition.

The NWFC has recently responded to several escaped grass fires with one fire burning down an outbuilding. With a low humidity forecast, burning conditions become more hazardous; and with windy conditions a grass fire can spread very quickly. Local winds are often strongest in the afternoon and just as the sun is going down.

This Category 2 and 3 open fire prohibition is meant to restrict all backyard burning projects and larger industry pile burning. Typically, for this time of year these activities are the leading causes of wildfires in the NWFC. The prohibition will cover the Nadina and Bulkley Fire Zones in their entirety and a portion of the Skeena Fire Zone known as the old Kalum District. A map is available here.

The following activities will be prohibited until monitored weather conditions are favourable for these activities to resume.

Category 2 open fires
a) material in 1 or 2 piles not exceeding 2-metres in height and 3-metres in width, or
b) stubble or grass burning over an area that does not exceed 0.2 hectares.

Category 3 open fires
a) any fire larger than 2-metres high by 3-metres wide,
b) 3 or more concurrently burning piles no larger than 2-metres high by 3-metres wide,
c) 1 or more burning windrows, or
d) stubble or grass burning over an area greater than 0.2 hectares.

This prohibition does not apply to campfires that are a half-metre high by a half-metre wide or smaller, or to fireworks, firecrackers or sky lanterns. A poster explaining the different categories of open burning is available online: www.gov.bc.ca/openfireregs

If a wildfire occurs as a result of your burning, you may be found responsible for the
government's fire control costs and any related damages to Crown resources.
