Licensee Data - Aspen Planers - Suitable Grizzly Habitat Area Polygon
This is the polygon that is referenced in Aspen Planers FSP under the Grizzly Bear Result & Strategy, provided below... ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5.2.2.7 Grizzly Bear A notice was issued under section 7(2) of the FPPR on December 30, 2004.. The notice identified amount, distribution, and attributes of habitat required. Two orders were given in 2007 under sections 9(2) and 10(1) of the Government Actions Regulation creating Wildlife Habitat Areas for Grizzly Bear within the Merritt TSA. The first established WHAs #8-083 to #8-089 on February 7, 2007, and the second established WHAs #3-026 to #3-028 on April 18, 2007. These orders included an exemption for those required to prepare a Forest Stewardship Plan from having to create results or strategies for managing Grizzly Bear in the Merritt TSA to the extent that the orders satisfied the 2004 notice. To determine this "extent", calculations were made using the notice (requiring 5211ha in the Merritt TSA) and approved Grizzly Bear WHA polygons (totaling 4502ha). The approved WHAs are 709ha short of fully satisfying the requirement in the notice. To address this deficiency, a 709ha area was included (shown as "Suitable Grizzly Bear Habitat" in Appendix B[h]) that is comprised of 535ha of a previously proposed WHA polygon that was not approved, plus 174ha adjacent to this draft WHA covering south-facing avalanche chutes-a minimal impact to the timber supply. Rene Thomsen, RPF, of Tolko in Merritt proposed this as an additional Grizzly Bear management area to Francis Iredale (Wildlife Biologist, MoE), who gave his approval. We have adopted this same area for this FSP. Because there is only a partial exemption to the extent that the 4502ha of Grizzly Bear WHAs addresses the requirements of the notice, the results or strategies in Section 5.2.2.7 are still included and apply only to the Suitable Grizzly Bear Habitat area. They have been updated to more closely resemble the approved general wildlife measures established in the Grizzly Bear WHA orders. ------------------------------------------------------------------------
