BF_GEO_GREEN_WHITE_POLYGON vector digital data BF_GEO_GREEN_WHITE_POLYGON Approximately 60% of land in Alberta is public land owned by the Alberta government. Public Lands Act (Act) outlines the use and allocation of public land. Public Lands and Forests Division of Alberta Sustainable Resource Development is responsible for the administration of public land in accordance with the provisions of the Act and the regulations pursuant to the Act. The branch authorizes the use of public land by issuing dispositions. The types of dispositions include agreements, easements, leases, letters of authority, licences, permits, quotas, reservations and sales. For administrative purposes, the province is divided into two (2) broad land use areas: Green Area and White Area. The Green Area (forested portion) comprises most of northern Alberta as well as the mountain and foothills areas along the province's western boundary. In the Green Area, public land is managed for timber production, watershed, wildlife and fisheries, recreation and other uses. Agricultural use is limited to grazing where it is compatible with other uses. The White Area (settled portion) consists of the populated central, southern and Peace River areas of the province. In the White Area, public land is part of the agricultural landscape. It is managed for various uses including agriculture, recreation, soil and water conservation, and fish and wildlife habitat. Some parts of the province have large tracts of public land whereas other parts have very few scattered parcels. Most of the public land in the White Area is under disposition or is otherwise committed. Primarily used for ASRD administrative purposes. Green Area: A part of Alberta established in 1948 by Order-in-Council 113/48 consisting of unsettled forest lands and covering 50.9 percent of the total area of the province. Wihdrawn from settlement. White Area: The portion of Alberta that is designated for settlement. Public lands were available for all dispositions under the Public Lands Act except homestead sales. Yellow Area: Transitory area of the province available for all dispositions under the Public Lands Act including "Homestead Sale" which lead to title. Homestead sales were discontinued in the early 1980s. Now rolled into Green and White Areas. Brown Area: This designation appeared for 1 year around 1962. These lands were suitable for both agriculture and forestry and were available for all dispositions under the Public Lands Act except those leading to title. Purple Area: There is little to no information available on this classification. Defining document is Order in Council. Boundaries were determined by Forest Management Branch. 2000.03 Initial compilation 2002.11 Addition of Green Area which disappeared from the Forest Management Unit C5. The approximate are from Township 8-16, Range 2-6, W5.
