Guide to logon TRIM Context on Terminal Server

The following outlines how to logon to the ministry's Terminal Server (also known as a Citrix server) to use TRIM Context. This is useful for Information Workers who may roam, or when you use a PC that does not have TRIM, or when you wish to use TRIM from the Internet (for this use the Logon via the web approach below).

Two ways to logon TRIM on Terminal Server

  1. logon via the web (works from the Internet or from any BC government PC)

  2. logon using Citrix Neighborhood (preferred method when at work; will not work if outside a BC government office)

To Logon via web

To easiest way is to use use your web browser.

  1. Click here https://dts.gov.bc.ca

  2. Enter your userid and password and click Login

  3. Be patient (as long as the flag or world is spinning in the top-right of your browser its thinking) and only click once!

  4. If you are outside the BC government and get a warning that you need software, click on the button to install the "Java" version of the Citrix client on the PC. It works well enough. After you have done this continue from #1.

  5. You should now see a folder called FOR. Click on it.

  6. Then a folder called FOR Applications. Click on it.

  7. Then a folder called TRIM Context. Yes, click on it.

  8. Then a program called TRIM_Prod. Click on it.
(This is TRIM Context but if you want you can click on any of the TRIM icons there. For example, TRIMDesktop is the TRIM Desktop client).

  9. If this is the 1st time you have used TRIM Context on terminal server be patient as you will get the usual server timeout. When you do, click ok and then click on Advanced and uncheck Local. It should say SLIPPER for the server name.

  10. Click Ok. Then select your dataset (FOR PROD) then click on Default to set it as the default dataset. Then click Ok.

  11. As you have done in the past, set your preferences for using TRIM.

  12. It will remember your settings the next time you logon.

To Logon via Citrix Neighborhood

This way is faster and easier and there are no problems like printing. It will work fine from all ministry PCs but may be harder to set up if its an old government PC that is not XP.

  • To do this do a Start, All Programs, Citrix, Program  Neighborhood.

  • Double-click (rather than single-click) on BCGOV, then, much like above, FOR, then FOR Applications, then TRIM Context, then TRIM_Prod.

  • Alternatively, you can click on any of the other icons there. For example, TRIM_Test is a test server but it is less used and may be faster than the one noted above. Its ok to use it.

  • Otherwise follow the steps above from 9 to 12 above.

No BCGOV farm?
If you do not see a BCGOV farm then do this. Under Citrix Neighborhood, click on Application Set Manager, then Find New Application Set. Click Next to Local Area Network,  then click on Server Location, select TCP/IP, then click Add, and enter FSFOR-T12 as the server name and click Ok. Then click on the down arrow of the select box and choose BCGOV. Then click Next, Next, Finish. Whew. Now you should see a BCGOV farm.

Other Logon Hints and Tips

  • You don't need TRIM on your PC for this to work. You can use either a ministry standard NT4 or XP PC.

  • When you select Print Report, make sure you select under "Printing To" the printer you want to print to. Then select the report you want.

  • On step #1 above, if you see a warning indicator at the bottom right of the page in the “Metaframe XP Message Center” stating that: “The ICA Web plug-in for Windows is not installed on your system” Then you will need to follow the links to install the Web Client for Windows that are available.

  • On the step #1 above, you can login with just your userid however if you have any problems with login then enter your username as idir\username.

  • Hint: You may want to create a shortcut to the DTS logon site at https://dts.gov.bc.ca on your desktop. Currently there is no way to set a shortcut directly to the application itself, just to the logon page.

  • if you have other problems or questions, please contact the usual RMHelp contacts or call Caroline Barron or Fred Beinhauer.
