Forests in Focus

A new educational program on forest ecology will soon be making its debut in B.C. schools.

Forests in Focus, supported by the Ministry of Forests and designed for students from kindergarten to Grade 12, features hands-on, multi-disciplinary activities that use drama, music and language arts to teach about the forest environment.

“There’s definitely lots of interest in this...particularly because it doesn’t have harvesting and silviculture information, it’s focussed on forest ecology,” said Kerrie Post, co-ordinator for Wild BC.

That organization produces Forests in Focus and other educational programs for the Ministry of Forests.

Kerrie expects Forests in Focus, which has been recommended for use in B.C. schools by the Ministry of Education, will appeal to a broad audience of educators including teachers, parks interpreters, scout and guide leaders.

“There’s not a lot of other material that has forest science information specific to B.C.,” she said.

Forests in Focus was five years in the making. “It went through several facelifts and it was challenging but we got it done,” said MOF communications officer Lindsey Olivier, who designed the book.

She said she is particularly pleased with the illustrations, which are kid friendly without being anthropomorphic.

Wild BC offers copies of the 280-page, spiral-bound activity guide for $26 and runs workshops on how to use the program.
