Its safe to work in the Nelson Forest
Region
by Kate SmithsonIt was lunch at the
Granite Point Golf Club for Nelson Forest Region staff Sept. 22, to mark an amazing
milestone: They have accumulated nearly 1.5 million work hours, between August, 1992 and
March 2000, with no time-loss injuries.
The regional office earned its first Award of Excellence in 1998. Two years later,
still time-loss-injury-free, they have two more awards.
"Its the first time Ive seen that level," said Bob Dalby,
Occupational Health and Accident Prevention Co-ordinator for the Human Resources branch.
"Thats a major performance achievement."
Bob handed out the awards at the lunch, including individual citations for five, 10,
15, 20 and 30 years of working safely.
The B.C. Safety Council considers the Nelson Region Office as a medium-risk workplace
because about one-third of the staff work in the field. Their efforts to stay safe are a
big part of the reason for the regions award. For the staff who work in the office,
Bob points out that a safety award like this is not to be taken lightly.
